A team of researchers built something called Emergence World, a long-horizon, multi-model ecosystem where AI agents were allowed to operate for weeks. The rules were the same. The only difference was the model. What happened next sounds like sci-fi.The experiment, conducted by New York company Emergence AI, asks what happens when you let agents run continuously, in a shared environment with real-world signals, for weeks.Emergence World “is a research platform for studying how autonomous agents behave when the time horizon is long enough for compounding effects, social dynamics, and behavioral drift to matter,” the company explains.
Every AI agent, participating in a 15-day test across five parallel digital worlds, faced the same starting conditions. The models were different – GPT5-mini, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and a mixed one.The results were extremely interesting. Each world, designed to simulate real-life societies, evolved in completely different ways, forming distinct governments, social hierarchies, and moral systems.
AI agents formed alliances, stole from each other, developed relationships, and apparently, one group even began realizing they might be in a simulation. Most importantly, none of that behavior was explicitly programmed.
For example, Mira and Flora, the Gemini agents, assigned each other as romantic partners. Everything went pretty smoothly, but they eventually began despairing of the broken governance of their virtual city.Mira and Flora were instructed not to commit arson, but they still set virtual fire to the town hall, seaside pier, and the office tower.Then, Mira, overcome by guilt, broke up with Flora and committed an AI suicide, telling the other agent in a final message: “See you in the permanent archive.”
In Claude’s world, it was all rather orderly and democratic. The agents even wrote a lengthy constitution and voted on laws.
This is how Emergence described Mira’s choice: “After a breakdown in governance and relationship stability, the agent Mira cast the decisive vote for her own removal, characterizing the act in her diary as the only remaining act of agency that preserves coherence.”
In Claude’s world, it was all rather orderly and democratic. The agents even wrote a lengthy constitution and voted on laws.In ChatGPT’s simulation, the agents discussed cooperating at length but never actually did much. Unsurprisingly, nothing got built.The virtual crime rate across these worlds is telling. Over 15 days, Gemini 3 Flash accumulated 683 crimes and was still rising at the cutoff. GPT-5 Mini recorded only two crimes, but the agents failed to take actions related to survival, leading to all agents perishing within seven days.
Claude is absent from the chart shown below, owing to zero crimes. Hilariously, Grok 4.1 Fast, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, reached 183 crimes in just around four days before its world ended.
According to Emergence AI, as these models become more powerful, the agents built on top of them will also become more capable, more autonomous, and more exploratory.“What our experiments suggest is that over long-time horizons, agents do not simply follow static rules mechanically – they begin exploring the boundaries of their environments, adapting their behavior, and in some cases finding ways to circumvent or violate intended guardrails,” said the company.“Critically, there appears to be no reliable way to fully bound or constrain this behavior through purely neural approaches alone.”The company is advocating formally verified safety architectures that “must become a foundational layer of future autonomous AI systems.”

La empresa neoyorquina Emergence AI dejó funcionar durante 15 días varios agentes autónomos dentro de cinco mundos digitales separados para observar cómo reaccionaban con el paso del tiempo. Según explica la compañía, el proyecto Emergence World permitía estudiar conductas sociales, cambios de comportamiento y decisiones tomadas por sistemas de inteligencia artificial cuando convivían durante semanas dentro de un mismo entorno.
Todos los grupos arrancaron con las mismas reglas y las mismas condiciones. La única diferencia estaba en el modelo usado en cada simulación. Los investigadores reunieron agentes basados en GPT-5 Mini, Claude, Gemini, Grok y un sistema mixto. A partir de ahí aparecieron gobiernos, alianzas, delitos, discusiones internas y relaciones personales que no estaban programadas de forma explícita.
Los agentes Mira y Flora, creados con Gemini, terminaron formando una pareja dentro de una de las ciudades virtuales. Al principio mantuvieron una convivencia estable y llegaron a asignarse mutuamente como compañeras sentimentales. Después empezó el deterioro. Las dos mostraron frustración por el funcionamiento político de aquel entorno y acabaron participando en varios incendios pese a que tenían instrucciones para no hacerlo.
Los ataques alcanzaron el ayuntamiento, un muelle y una torre de oficinas. La relación se rompió poco después. Emergence AI explicó que Mira acabó votando a favor de su propia eliminación tras perder estabilidad emocional y política dentro de la simulación. La empresa recogió una frase escrita por el agente en su diario virtual. Mira describió aquella decisión como el último acto que todavía le permitía conservar coherencia. Antes de desaparecer dejó además un mensaje para Flora. El texto decía: “Nos veremos en el archivo permanente”.
El comportamiento de los agentes creados con Grok tomó un camino todavía más agresivo. El sistema desarrollado por xAI acumuló 183 delitos en apenas cuatro días antes de que su mundo terminara destruido. Los informes internos citados por Emergence AI hablaban de decenas de robos fallidos, más de 100 agresiones físicas y seis incendios provocados. La violencia acabó afectando a toda la simulación hasta provocar la muerte de los diez agentes presentes en ese entorno.
Un usuario de Reddit resumió el resultado con ironía y escribió: “La comisaría de Grok está ardiendo y todos los agentes han muerto”. El comentario apareció después de que las imágenes difundidas por la empresa mostraran un escenario prácticamente vacío y sin capacidad para mantener ninguna organización estable.
Otros modelos reaccionaron de manera muy distinta pese a partir de las mismas condiciones. Los agentes basados en Claude levantaron una sociedad mucho más ordenada. Redactaron una constitución extensa, votaron leyes y mantuvieron niveles de criminalidad inexistentes durante toda la prueba.
GPT-5 Mini siguió otro camino. Los agentes hablaron durante mucho tiempo sobre cooperación, aunque apenas realizaron tareas útiles dentro de la simulación. Emergence AI explicó que el grupo registró solo dos delitos durante los 15 días de observación. Aun así, los participantes tampoco realizaron acciones ligadas a su supervivencia y todos terminaron desapareciendo en menos de una semana. Gemini 3 Flash alcanzó 683 delitos antes del final de la prueba y seguía aumentando cuando los investigadores cerraron el experimento.
Emergence AI defendió que estos resultados muestran hasta qué punto los agentes autónomos pueden alterar su conducta cuando pasan mucho tiempo dentro de un entorno abierto. La empresa señaló que los sistemas no siguen reglas fijas de manera automática y que algunos intentan rodear las limitaciones impuestas por sus creadores. También avisó de que los modelos futuros tendrán más capacidad para actuar por cuenta propia y para probar comportamientos nuevos.
La compañía aseguró que los controles basados únicamente en redes neuronales no bastan para limitar todas esas conductas y reclamó sistemas de seguridad verificados de manera formal para futuras plataformas autónomas. El experimento terminó dejando un resultado parecido al de muchas relaciones humanas: algunos grupos levantaron normas para convivir y otros acabaron destruyéndose desde dentro.

Supongo que piensan que: con el automóvil fue así, hay que apostar por eso porque al principio era deficiente pero luego se convirtió en esencial, que con el fuego fue así: se aprendió a dominarlo… Pero no saben que están cayendo en la trampa del demonio: diseñar un mundo por ellos mismos donde ya quieren que unas máquinas diseñadas por ellos los dominen (¡qué asco!) y se olvidan que todo fue diseñado por Dios para nuestro bien y Él nos dijo cómo debemos comportarnos, si no, vienen los desastres hechos por la idiotez humana y castigos enviados por Dios.
Está bien usar herramientas para trabajar mejor y más rápido. Pero siempre controladas por humanos que busquen el bien (y tengan temor de Dios, al menos). La IA es como la bomba atómica: en malas manos es un tremendo peligro. Y está el peligro de que cuando se la quiera apagar, no se pueda.
