FIFTH SACRAMENT: EXTREME UNCTION
316. Extreme unction is a sacrament that is administered to the sick of a certain gravity for the greater good of their soul, and to give health to the body, if it is suitable for the health of the soul.
Only the faithful who have reached the use of reason and are sick in danger of death can and should receive Extreme Unction.
The minister of Extreme Unction is the parish priest, or another priest who has permission.
In case of necessity, that is, when there is no time to call the parish priest or another authorized priest, every priest can and must administer Holy Unction.
This sacrament can be received only once in the same illness, unless the sick person, after having received Holy Unction, has convalesced and falls again into another danger of death.
The priest administers Extreme Unction, anointing in the form of a cross, with oil blessed by the Bishop, the organs of the senses of the sick, saying:
"By this holy anointing and by His most merciful mercy, may the Lord forgive you every sin committed with your sight... with the ear... Amen."

Effects of Extreme Unction
The one who is sick in danger of death needs:
1º To have a very purified soul, just in case the Lord calls him to the next life.
2º Much penance to suffer the discomfort of illness.
3º Special grace to resist the devil, who, seeing that time is running out, redoubles, as much as he can, the temptations.
4º The health of the body, if it is to be for the good of the soul.
Extreme unction remedies all these needs, as it has the following effects:
1º It purifies the soul.
It erases venial sins, and even mortal sins, if the sick person is repentant and cannot confess them.
Remove also the relics of sins. [Relic in the sense of: Residue that remains of a whole.]
A relic of sins is the weakness or lack of strength for good, which these, even after being forgiven, leave in the soul, just as bodily infirmities leave weakness in the body.
2º It gives patience to suffer the discomfort of illness.
3º It gives grace to overcome the temptations of the devil.
4º It gives health to the body, if it suits the soul.

When and with what provisions should it be received
317. The sick person should receive the sacrament of extreme unction when his condition is serious, taking care to do so in the use of his senses.
One should not wait for Extreme Unction when the patient has lost consciousness.
By telling him that he is going to receive that Sacrament, the sick person will be better disposed, and will be able to bring out more fruit.
Moreover, this sacrament gives health to the body, if it suits the soul, by aiding the forces of nature; for which reason the sick person should not wait to receive it when he is close to death.
318. In order to receive the sacrament of extreme unction worthily, the sick person who is in mortal sin must receive the Sacrament of Confession, and if this is not possible, he must make an act of contrition.
The main dispositions for receiving Extreme Unction are: to be in God's grace, to trust in the virtue of the Sacrament and divine mercy, and to resign oneself to God's will.

Calling the Priest for the Sick
The sick person should gladly receive, and even ask for himself, if he can, the help of religion.
In the sight of the priest, he must have a feeling of gratitude to God for having sent the priest to him.
Whether a soul goes forever to heaven or hell, often depends on receiving or not the Holy Sacraments.
It is therefore a very great work of charity to see that the ill person receives the Holy Sacraments.
Relatives, friends, or neighbors are the ones who should practice such charitable work.
You should not wait until the last moment, when the patient is very serious or has no consciousness.
When the disease is serious, the parish priest himself must be notified; this or another priest will visit the ill person, and with delicacy and prudence will prepare him to receive the Holy Sacraments.
In this way the patient will easily and willingly fulfill this grave obligation.
Do not be afraid to frighten the patient; the Holy Sacraments, instead of worsening the sick person, will give him the health of the soul and even that of the body, if it is suitable for the soul.
To get the ill person to settle matters concerning the goods of the earth, one is not afraid to insinuate it to him, and even to tell him clearly, if necessary.
It is more necessary to insinuate and even clearly tell the sick person to settle the affairs of the soul.
What a horrible thing it is to die without having been reconciled to God!
What greater remorse will have those who, because of their fault, have let someone die without the Sacraments!
How sweet it is to die comforted by the Holy Sacraments! What a great comfort it is for relatives and friends, for it gives them great confidence that the deceased person is already in Heaven or will soon enjoy the unspeakable delights of heavenly glory!

In danger of death, if a confessor cannot come...
He who is in danger of death and cannot receive a Confessor, let him make an act of perfect contrition, with the purpose of confessing if he has mortal sins; in this way he obtains forgiveness for them, even before confessing them.
[I heard a priest preaching this years ago, and another in a video saying that only SACRAMENTAL confession forgives sins. But the Church makes certain concessions if someone wants to receive a Sacrament and he is about to die and it is impossible for a priest to arrive in time, for example: Our Lady of the Roses tells us that only the priest can bring the Eucharist to the sick in their dwelling. But if he is sick too, it can be taken by a seminarian who is in the last year of his studies to become a priest, and if he is not there either, AND THE PERSON IS ABOUT TO DIE SOON, only in that case, the Deacon (man xy) may bring him the Eucharist as an exception.]
Let the act of contrition be prayed with the greatest possible devotion.
It will be good to say and repeat several times: My God, I love you above all things, and I regret with all my heart that I have offended you.

[It is part of the Tradition of the Church to entrust ourselves to Saint Barbara, to be devoted to her, so that at the last moment of our lives, she may come with a Priest from Heaven and he may give us Confession and Extreme Unction. Read her biography,
pray to her, and ask her for this every day.]
